Today, Congress is going to hold hearings on a bill that would radically censor the web as web know it. This bill has bi-partisan support which I think you all know is very rare. Some of the tenants of the bill include:
- Website Blocking: The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by users. (think Tumblr being blocked for what you post that you don’t have a copyright for)
- It becomes a felony to stream copyrighted work, even if you are a totally non commercial user. So, think posting a copyrighted work to tumblr, you could be in real legal trouble.
- The Digital Millennium Copyright Act will be marginalized. The DMCA has protected the evolution of the web as an open place where innovation and ideas flourish. This bill will take away that openness and nurturing environment and replace it with one that benefits large, old, unresponsive media companies.
Most major internet companies like google, tumblr, facebook and mozilla have come out against this bill and while we aren’t google, BustedTees which uses the protection of the DMCA and parody laws to make really funny t-shirts, is against it too. Do some reading, understand the issue and if you agree with the folks that have built the internet that censoring the internet is a bad idea, tell congress here: http://americancensorship.org/
